Abstract

Objectives: This study determined the effect of ethnicity on systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, pulse pressure, and basal rate pressure product of young adults of Yoruba and Igbo origin.

Method: This is a cross-sectional comparative descriptive study conducted among students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Four hundred (400) students (200 Yorubas and 200 Igbos) between the ages of 18-40 were recruited for the study. The weight and height were measured using a stadiometer with a weighing scale and blood pressure (BP) was measured using a digital blood pressure monitor. BMI and BP were classified using WHO and JNCVII classifications respectively.

Result:  there is a significant difference in the mean weight (kg) and height (m) between Yoruba and Igbo individuals. The mean weight (kg) of Yoruba was 59.28±0.92 and of Igbo was 63.03±1.07 (P=0.001). The mean height (m) of Yoruba was 1.65±0.87 and of Igbo was 1.69±0.87 (P=0.001). However, there is no statistically significant difference in the mean BMI of Yoruba and Igbo individuals. The mean BMI of Yoruba was 21.65±0.30 and the mean BMI of Igbo was 22.00±0.30 (P=0.251).The mean systolic blood pressure (mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (mmHg), mean arterial pressure (mmHg), and pulse pressure (mmHg) were similar between the Yoruba and Igbo groups, as evidenced by the t-tests and p-values (t=1.27, P=0.204; t=0.81, P=0.419; t=1.15, P=0.250; and t=0.80, P=0.420, respectively). However, the basal rate pressure product was significantly different, with the Yoruba group having a higher mean than the Igbo group (t = 4.19, P = 0.001).

Conclusion: In conclusion, although the Igbos were taller and heavier than the Yorubas, the Yorubas had significantly higher blood pressure readings. As a result, ethnicity should be taken into consideration when interpreting and utilizing blood pressure indices and anthropometric measurements
